Introduction/Summary

Renovating a home with extensions often presents a unique challenge: seamlessly blending existing timber floors with newly laid ones, especially when different timber species are involved. In a recent Surrey Hills project, we faced the task of harmonising old and new Tassie Oak, alongside a back extension laid with Baltic Pine. The client's vision was clear – a warmer, cohesive look where colour differences disappeared. Discover how MyFlooring achieved a beautiful, even blend with a custom warm limewash, proving that contrasting timbers can indeed create a unified, inviting space.

The Surrey Hills Challenge: A Symphony of Timbers

This charming Surrey Hills home featured an existing Tassie Oak floor, with a new extension at the back also fitted with new Tassie Oak. The challenge was amplified by a backend section that sported Baltic Pine, a timber distinctly different in grain and natural tone from Tassie Oak. The client desired a harmonious flow throughout their expanded home, seeking more warmth and an even blend that would eliminate the noticeable distinctions between the old and new timbers, and particularly between the Tassie Oak and Baltic Pine.

The Art of Blending: Custom Warm Limewash

Achieving such a nuanced blend required a precise and tailored approach. Since Tassie Oak is a light-coloured timber, it provides an excellent base for colour adjustments. After expertly sanding all the timber floors, we developed a bespoke limewash solution. This wasn't a stark white limewash; instead, it was formulated to be a lot warmer, more brown and oaky, perfectly designed to infuse warmth and gently unify the various shades of Tassie Oak, old and new.

The real test came with the Baltic Pine in the backend section. Baltic Pine typically has a different grain and can react uniquely to finishes. To ensure a seamless transition and to mask the inherent differences between the Baltic Pine and the Tassie Oak, we applied a heavy lime wash to this area. This heavier application allowed us to achieve a cohesive colour across the entire floor, making it far less obvious that different timber species were present. This meticulous timber floor colour blending expertise is what sets a truly professional finish apart.

The Stunning Outcome: Seamless Harmony

The result in Surrey Hills was a testament to meticulous planning and expert execution. The entire expanse of timber flooring, encompassing both old and new Tassie Oak and the challenging Baltic Pine, now flowed together beautifully. The custom warm limewash created the inviting, cohesive atmosphere the client desired, ensuring the floors felt unified and significantly improved upon their previous state. The client was absolutely thrilled with their bright, harmonious new floors, proving that even complex timber blends can achieve stunning results.
