Introduction/Summary
Renovations often bring exciting new spaces, but they can also create challenging transitions, especially with flooring. In a recent Elwood project, a significant extension beyond the kitchen introduced new Tassie Oak timber floors that needed to harmonise with an existing section covered in a thick, almost black, paint-like finish. Discover how MyFlooring expertly removed this heavy coating, blended the old and new timbers with a custom limewash, and finished with a durable water-based polyurethane, achieving a seamless and stunning floor that unifies the entire living area.
The Elwood Challenge: From Dark Past to Bright Future
The existing timber floors in this Elwood home presented a unique dilemma: a very dark, opaque finish, almost akin to a decking oil, dominated the space. When the construction company extended the property with new Tassie Oak timber floors, the contrast became stark. The goal was clear: to bridge this visual gap and create a continuous, lighter flow throughout the expanded area. This required not just a simple refinish, but a complete hardwood floor colour change to match the new timber and the client's brighter aesthetic.
The Transformation Process: Expert Sanding & Custom Limewash
Our process began with thorough and careful sanding to tackle the heavily coated existing timber. This was a critical step for black finish removal, as we needed to expose the raw timber underneath without causing damage. Once the original timber was revealed, we could clearly assess its condition alongside the newly laid Tassie Oak.
Understanding the need for a perfect blend, we prepared several samples, showcasing different limewash variations on both the old and new Tassie Oak. This crucial custom floor finishes service allowed the builder and client to visualise the outcome and confidently choose "sample number 2." This selected limewash tone was then meticulously applied, specifically formulated to gently lighten the timber while creating a cohesive appearance between the previously dark and newly installed sections. The limewash's ability to subtly alter colour while allowing the natural grain to show through was key to blending old and new timber seamlessly.
The Protective Finish: Water-Based Polyurethane
To protect the newly transformed floors and enhance their longevity, we applied a high-quality water-based polyurethane. This finish was chosen for several reasons:
Clarity: It ensures the beautiful, light limewash effect remains true, without yellowing over time.
Durability: It provides excellent resistance to daily wear and tear, crucial for a busy family home.
Modern Aesthetic: Water-based polyurethanes offer a clean, natural look that perfectly complements contemporary designs.
The Stunning Outcome: A Unified & Luminous Space
The transformation of the Elwood floors was truly remarkable. The former dark, heavy finish was replaced by a continuous, bright, and harmonious expanse of timber. Residents in Melbourne/ Elwood are increasingly opting for delivered the perfect solution, creating a sense of openness and modernity throughout the expanded living area. This project stands as a testament to MyFlooring's expertise in handling complex renovation timber flooring challenges, turning disparate sections into a beautifully unified space.
