At MyFlooring, every timber floor tells a story, and some, like beautiful parquetry, tell a particularly intricate one. Our latest project involved a classic Jarrah parquetry floor, and it was a fantastic example of precision and transformation. This floor was destined for a lighter, cleaner look, achieved through meticulous sanding, effective bleaching, and a robust finish.

Now, anyone familiar with timber floors knows that sanding parquetry is a unique challenge. Unlike straight-lay floorboards where the grain runs in one direction, parquetry tiles are laid in various patterns, meaning the timber grain changes direction with every block.

This requires immense care and expertise during sanding to avoid leaving unsightly marks or 'cross-grain' scratches. Our team meticulously worked through each section, ensuring a flawless, uniform surface, ready for its new chapter.

Once sanded to perfection, the client's vision was to remove Jarrah's inherent deep red tones for a brighter aesthetic. This is where the magic of bleaching came into play. We carefully applied our timber floor bleaching treatment, which effectively lifted those dominant red pigments, leaving the Jarrah significantly lighter and creating a wonderfully clean, neutral base. It's always amazing to see the immediate impact this process has! After the bleaching, we meticulously filled any gaps in the parquetry, ensuring a seamless, polished finish across the entire intricate pattern.

For the final protective layer, we opted for a commercial-grade 2-pack water-based polyurethane. On bleached Jarrah timber, this choice is particularly brilliant. Why? Because while bleaching achieves the desired lightness, a quality water-based poly ensures that newly lightened tone remains true over time, without the yellowing or ambering effect that some other finishes can introduce. This kind of finish not only provides exceptional durability – perfect for busy homes – but also maintains a crystal-clear appearance that truly allows the unique grain and newly lightened colour of the Jarrah parquetry to shine through. It proves that even without adding a lime wash or stain, a professional sand and the right water-based refinish can create an absolutely stunning "new" floor.

The result was a testament to meticulous craftsmanship: a light, elegant Jarrah parquetry floor, completely free of previous imperfections, with its intricate patterns beautifully highlighted by the clear, resilient finish. It was a true transformation that honored the timber's original character while delivering a fresh, modern feel.
